since when did "embiggen" become an actual word?

if you recall, the "word" was used in an episode of the Simpsons, in a saying that Springfield's eponymous founder was fond of using ("a noble spirit embiggens the smallest man.")

i just saw it used on flickr's website - "embiggen small things to fill screen."
