"i love you, sis" will never be the same.

sunday i was channel surfing and stumbled across “brothers and sisters in love” on bbc america.

oh man.

i was not prepared for this.

the show focused on GSA - genetic sexual attraction – which comes about between immediate relatives (typically siblings) who either have been separated at an early age or who have never met and who meet later in life, only to fall in love and basically want to get down and dirty together.

the most compelling story involved a german brother (patrick) and sister (susan) who fell in love and had four kids. FOUR. she popped out those babies quick. due to incest laws, the brother was sent to jail and their children –all but one- taken away from them. sadly, while patrick went to jail a second time after they lost their court appeal, susan ended up getting with another guy (one she didn’t share a parent with) and had a children with him. (not cool, susan, not cool.)

another story showcased an englishman (his name, unfortunately, escapes me) who was married to a woman named mary since the 50s. he discovers that he has a sister, doris, living in bermuda. they meet and he instantly gets the hots for her. he starts writing her love letters and always tries to get really close to her during his visit to bermuda, with his wife along. mary knows he’s fallen for her – but she sticks by him. even doris knows, but she was definitely not down for that. eventually, the old man finally calms down his hormones and he got over his gsa. everyone is happy and not attracted to their siblings once again. huzzah.

while watching the show, i was torn between my sympathetic sighs and my disgusted shudders. on one hand, it makes some sort of sense – you’re an adult and then you find a person who just seems soooooo familiar or your body seems to spark off the similar energy – you’d naturally want to be with them. but dude, seriously, you’re directly related! your mom and dad had sex and had both of you! you came from the same vagina! aaaaghhh.

gsa just isn't my cup of super irish breakfast tea (which i just bought today because it was SUPER irish - what does that mean?! i'm such a sucker).
